The Undercover Parent Activity 13: Summarizing …

Black Job-Seekers Hide Race For Corporate America. A 2004 study showed that resumes with recognizably African-American names were twice as likely to parent, be ignored as other resumes. Dissertation? Black job seekers with advanced degrees have reported removing any indication of race from their resume just to get a shot at job. Host Liane Hansen talks to diversity columnist Michelle T. Johnson of the the undercover, Kansas City Star about the difficulties. LIANE HANSEN, host: This is einstein see it, WEEKEND EDITION from the undercover NPR News. I'm Liane Hansen. On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its monthly unemployment figures. December's jobless rate was the officer, same as November's: 10 percent. But among African-Americans, unemployment increased by six-tenths of a percent to 16.2 percent.

Coming up, a report on the unemployment problems black teenagers face, but first, many college-educated black professionals have been struggling to find jobs in recent months, partly because of the economy and partly because of corporate America's spotty relationship with race. Last month, The New York Times ran an article on African-Americans who've opted to, quote, whiten, unquote, their resumes to get a foot in the undercover parent, the corporate door, because any indication of their race could be a roadblock to an interview. Joining us is Michelle T. Johnson who writes a column about diversity for the Kansas City Star. She's at member station KCUR in Kansas City, Missouri. Welcome to papers, the program. The Undercover Parent Thesis? Ms. MICHELLE T. JOHNSON (Columnist, Kansas City Star): Hello, I'm glad to be here. HANSEN: The New York Times article that ran last month saying some African-Americans have changed their names or omitted the name of their school if it was a historically black university.

Is the concept of de-blacking a resume news to many African-Americans? Ms. JOHNSON: No, not at all. It's something that blacks who graduate from college or, in my case, law school or any other kind of graduate school are familiar with. You analyze whether you have a black association mentioned on your resume. You have people look at your resume to do the check of, hmm, can someone tell that I'm black from research papers this? You question whether the reason you haven't been getting any callbacks is because of what you list, because of your name or your organizations.

HANSEN: So, considering the parent, corporate culture in America, is this a necessary move? Ms. JOHNSON: You know, I think it would be going too far to say that it's a necessary move because that would imply that every recruiter or corporation has that kind of a bias. Essay The World See It? But it is something that one has to think of, especially when they're entering the parent thesis, job market, because anything that makes you stand out probably, in a way that even distracts a little bit from your qualifications can just be a problem. There have been studies that have basically taken the same resume and they put a, quote, black name on it versus a name that isn't easily identified as black. Thesis Bibliography? And the person with the the undercover parent, white or the nondescript name is twice as likely to research papers, be called for an interview.

HANSEN: Well, say there is someone who manages to enter the workforce and lands a job. Parent? Do the issues surrounding race go away? Ms. Letter For It? JOHNSON: No, they never go away. I think if you're fortunate enough to work at a place where you get past that in the undercover thesis, terms of hiring and you do a great job and you develop wonderful relationships with people, then it may not be the dominant influence on how you progress, but it's always an influence. I was an employment attorney for eight years, so as part of a litigation case, I would see lots of personnel files and it never ceased to resume tips, amaze me how when a manager was talking about a African-American employee, their personality was almost always mentioned as part of their evaluation in a way that it wasn't mentioned with people who weren't black. You know, that Mary, she sure is a joy to work with. Or the negative might happen. Parent Thesis? A black male may find himself having comments in his evaluation about einstein essay how he's intimidating or difficult when comments about the personality or the attitude of coworkers who weren't black weren't mentioned in their evaluations.

HANSEN: What advice would you give to jobseekers? Ms. The Undercover? JOHNSON: Well, no one likes to thesis bibliography chicago, feel as if they have to turn into the undercover, someone else to obtain a job. Tips? At the same time, accommodations on your resume are things that everybody, regardless of race, has to do. For example, you know, a person who is African-American might want to put as much emphasis as they can on the things that are universal and sometimes that can be difficult. For example, if your only experience in parent thesis, leadership is in black organizations, then you're going to trick bag because if you take off those items, yeah, you've taken off any indicators that you're black, but you've also taken off the best stuff you have on your resume about your leadership potential. HANSEN: Okay. So, hearing this, people who are in alice munro, a position to hire, whom may be hearing this, what would you tell them to keep in mind?

Ms. JOHNSON: I would hope that employers, managers, HR professionals, recruiters would look at each resume at the value the parent, person has to job application letter officer, offer. What skills they have, what credentials they have. Did they force themselves, so to speak, to the undercover parent, keep their eye on thesis the ball? Which is - would this person be someone who would fit in our organization based on thesis what they've done so far in their lives? HANSEN: Michelle T. Letter For It? Johnson writes a column about diversity for the Kansas City Star. She joined us from the undercover parent member station KCUR. Thank you so much for being with us. Ms. JOHNSON: You're welcome.

Keywords?). We have clear, no-nonsense guidance based on thousands of real-life success stories. Here’s how to do it yourself, broken down in job application, 10 parts. Our guide is the undercover based on one fundamental premise: Your resume is dissertation org ua a marketing document. Thesis! It’s not the history of alice munro essays, your past; it’s an ad. Thesis! You’re selling yourself to the employer, and albert essay as i see it competing against the undercover parent thesis other people who are attempting to do the same thing. A great resume doesn’t just tell them what you have done but makes the same assertion that all good ads do: If you buy this product, you will get these specific, direct benefits . It presents you in the best light. It convinces the employer that you have what it takes to org ua be successful in this new position or career. It inspires the prospective employer to pick up the phone and ask you to come in. YOU’RE ADVERTISING YOURSELF.

Here’s a key thing we know based on deep research: Every resume is a one-of-a-kind marketing communication. The Undercover! It should be appropriate to your situation and do exactly what you want it to do. Resume! The reality is that most resumes fail to stir the interest of prospective employers. So, even if you face fierce competition, with a well-written resume you should be invited to thesis interview more often than many people – even people more qualified than you. A great resume doesn’t only tell the employer what you have done. It makes the letter for it same assertion that all good ads do: If you buy this product, you will get these specific, direct benefits. It presents you in the best possible light. It convinces the the undercover employer that you absolutely have what it takes to be successful in this new position or career. The very best marketing is research-based marketing.

So, do your research. Visit the employer’s website often and follow the organization on social media. (Do this of course after doing any necessary cleanup of your social media profile – more on that in Section 8 of this guide, WORK ALL THE DIGITAL ANGLES .) What types of accomplishments do they celebrate and how can you weave similar accomplishments into your resume? What kind of language do they use to describe achievements? If almost everything is “significant” or “breakthrough,” how do you tactfully place those words in bibliography chicago, various sections of the undercover parent thesis, your resume? You have to org ua know your customer’s needs – and have a very clear sense of the skills they’re looking for in their ideal job candidate. Our experience shows that your resume must demonstrate that you have at least 70% of a job’s requirements to have a legitimate hope of landing an interview. Thesis! Do all the research you can, from online searches and social media tracking to networking with people you know.

If you know anyone who works there, definitely approach them for a conversation – or better yet, coffee or lunch. TIP: Avoid HR at this stage: HR teams are constantly pushing back on unsolicited inquiries from people who want jobs. A sobering fact is that job recruiters spend an average of six seconds on every resume as they sort through digital stacks of applicants. So, focus on as i, the employer’s needs, not yours . It is imperative that you take what you learn during your research and the undercover parent apply it as you customize your resume. Thesis Bibliography! There is no shame in adjusting your resume to the undercover parent appeal to your target audience; in fact, the opposite is true. It would be inadvisable not to adapt your resume – even if slightly – for each job application. Imagine that you are the person doing the hiring. This someone with skin in the game.

Often, it’s the papers on immigration person who is responsible for thesis the bottom-line performance of the resume project or team you hope to join. This is someone who cares deeply how well the job will be done. You need to the undercover write your resume to appeal directly to job application him or her: If this person thinks you can be an asset and help make them look good, you have a real shot. To reiterate: Your resume is a very informed, targeted advertisement. At the parent thesis end of the day it’s an ad…nothing more, nothing less.

2. YOUR RESUME’S #1 JOB: LAND AN INTERVIEW. It’s critical to always bear in mind that your resume is dissertation a tool with one specific purpose: to win an interview. If it doesn’t, it isn’t an effective resume. So how do you prevail? First, embrace some basic truths about the job-seeking landscape. First, let go of any misguided preconceptions about the undercover parent thesis, what your resume is: It’s not about you. Like any strong piece of advertising, it’s not about the product being sold – it’s about the buyer and what they want. Papers! Consider Coke advertisements: They say very little about the soft drink; they say a lot about how people who drink the beverage are happy and have a lot of happy people around them.

The focus is on the benefits of drinking Coke. Your resume is about the benefits of hiring you. Your resume is not a place to brag; nor is it a place to be modest. Its sole purpose is to the undercover thesis generate interest in you. What differentiates you from the competition.

In addition to including all relevant information about your skills, background, accomplishments, etc. (see Section 5 and Section 6), find ways to munro essays include details that could generate curiosity. Were you born in a different country? Is there community or volunteer work that’s appealing? Are you fluent in multiple languages? Did you go through college in three years – or later in parent, life? These are real people reading your resume, and maybe there’s a fact about chicago, you they’ll relate to or find interesting.

What does that mean? In The Pathfinder, we discuss how roughly 75% of people have a personality type we describe as Tribal. They are group workers, usually most successful and the undercover thesis satisfied working with and on immigration through other people as members of an the undercover thesis organization, group, or ‘tribe.’” They are at their best when they are attuned to the tribe and contributing to its goals. (For the record, the other 25% are what we call Maestros who identify as specialist – e.g., “I am a software developer” versus “I work for Microsoft” – for more, see The Pathfinder.) Back to org ua the tribe: If you’re selling yourself to an organization, you’re selling yourself to a tribe. The tribe’s members will have to be convinced that you’re “one of them.” Use the research conducted in the undercover parent, Section 1 to inform your approach in how you construct and thesis write your resume. Consider the scenario of two tribes living on the undercover parent thesis, opposite sides of a lake. If you want to be hired by the tribe across the lake, you want to on immigration appear as though you’re already one of them. This will inform everything you put in your resume – from the adjectives you use to the aspects of your education and work experience that you emphasize, to the outside interests you include. If the thesis employer’s mission statement includes language about “customer focus” and its website talks about “innovation,” those words should be reflected in your resume (in a not-too-obvious way). If the employer is “results-driven” and cares about “sustainable solutions,” make it clear that you are results-focused and 2009 resume tips understand the parent importance of sustainable progress.

You have to learn how to write powerful but subtle advertising copy. An effective way to do this is to think of it as telling an the world introductory story. When you meet someone, you want to know “their story,” right? It’s the same for that hiring manager looking at your resume. It’s important that all of the information you present fits together cohesively, and helps the parent thesis hiring manager understand your background, skills and capacities, and for it officer the educational and work experiences that have led to the undercover you to where you are today. While you are selling a product, you shouldn’t “hard sell” or make any claims that are not true.

Most employers respond to resumes that are both impressive as well as credible. They are not fond of hyperbole; they also have no way of knowing if you’re being overly-modest. Alice Munro! It’s a balancing act. 3. KNOW EXACTLY WHAT KIND OF RESUME YOU’RE WRITING. There are three basic types of resumes: Chronological, Functional, and “Combined” Chronological – Functional. Generally speaking, we prefer the Combined approach – but this decision should be informed by the type of job you’re seeking and the type of employer you’re seeking to impress.

For example, if you’re applying for a job in a more traditional field such as law, science, or engineering, a Chronological approach would be best. The Undercover Parent Thesis! If you are changing your career or returning to the job market after a break, a Functional resume is the way to dissertation go. A Combined approach offers the most flexibility; and if you’re in a creative field, you might make modifications to a Combined format that showcase your artistic eye or style. At the the undercover parent end of the thesis day, it’s all about generating the best marketing copy to sell yourself. The chronological resume is the more traditional resume structure.

The Experience section is the the undercover parent focus of the resume; each job (or the last several jobs) is described in some detail, and there is no major section of skills or accomplishments at the beginning of the resume. Letter For It Officer! This structure is parent primarily used when you are staying in the same profession and in the same type of work. It is also commonly used in certain fields such as law and academia. We recommend that the chronological resume always have an Objective or Summary for resume the reader. Advantages: This approach may appeal to more traditional readers and may be best in the undercover parent thesis, conventional or conservative fields. Alice Munro! It makes it easier to parent understand what you did in what job, and for it officer may help the name of the the undercover thesis employer stand out (if it’s impressive).

The disadvantage is that it is much more difficult to highlight what you do best. This format is rarely appropriate for chicago someone making a career change. The functional resume highlights your major skills and accomplishments from the very beginning. It helps the reader see clearly what you can do for them, rather than having to read through the the undercover parent job descriptions to find out. Actual company names and positions are in a subordinate position, with no description under each.

There are many different types of formats for functional resumes. The functional resume is a must for resume career changers, but is very appropriate for generalists, for those with spotty or divergent careers, for those with a wide range of skills in their given profession, for students, for the undercover thesis military officers, for homemakers returning to the job market, and for those who want to make slight shifts in their career direction. Advantages: It will help you most in reaching for a new goal or direction, and job application for it it is highly recommended for such purposes. The disadvantage is the undercover parent that it isn’t easy for the employer to chicago quickly discern exactly what you did in each job (which could be a problem for some conservative resume reviewers). A combined resume includes elements of both the chronological and functional formats. It may be a shorter chronology of job descriptions preceded by parent thesis, a short “Skills and dissertation org ua Accomplishments” section – or with a longer Summary including a skills list or a list of the undercover parent thesis, “qualifications”). It can also be a standard functional resume with the accomplishments under headings of different jobs held. There are important advantages to this combined approach: It maximizes the advantages of both kinds of resumes, avoiding potential negative effects of either type. One disadvantage is job application for it that it tends to the undercover parent thesis be a longer resume.

Another is that it can be repetitious: Accomplishments and skills may have to papers be repeated in both the the undercover parent “functional” section and the “chronological” job descriptions. 4. Officer! GUIDANCE FOR A CAREER CHANGE RESUME. Clearly, career change has become a new norm of thesis, working. As we noted in Section 3, a career-change job search calls for a Functional resume. DEFINE YOUR TARGET MARKET. “Target market” in advertising refers to people a company aims to alice munro essays turn into customers. In your career-change job search, your target is the collection of specific organizations that might hire you to do what you want to do…where you want to do it. The Undercover Thesis! Start with geographic requirements – is the world…. or Seattle? Within that geographic area, target the type of organization that interests you: profit-making, non-for-profit, or government? What kind of research on immigration, business or industry? What size organization?

Once you have your parameters, identify specific employers and thesis learn all you can about them. What is their history? What do they emphasize in their messaging? Who are the job application letter for it officer decision makers? What is their hiring philosophy? What kind of work culture is it? In addition to the undercover parent digging around online and in social media, use your networking skills to learn all you can to help inform how you customize your resume. PLAY UP TRANSFERRABLE SKILLS. Jobs in bibliography chicago, very different professional fields can often have a number of thesis, similar requirements. Let’s say that you want to go from thesis, a marketing position in a pharmaceutical firm to a fund-raising role for a not-for-profit.

What are the skills you’ve already demonstrated that are applicable? They may be more than you think. Consider these possibilities: Time management Project management Collaboration Persuasive communicating Strong decision-making Composure under pressure Innovative problem-solving. You should also be prepared to speak to your motivation for a career change.

You can weave a little of parent, this into your Objective, then also be prepared to write about it briefly in your cover letter, and then of course speak to it when you land an interview. As a career changer, you are effectively moving from one tribe to another. Within the bounds of integrity, the story you tell has to explain why the on immigration tribe you now want to enter is really the right one for you (and not the thesis other one). Thesis Chicago! This is another instance where research is critical. Go to LinkedIn and similar sites and the undercover parent thesis take a look at a good number of resumes of people seeking similar jobs. Also, tap into your circle of colleagues, friends, and papers on immigration family. Tune into the axis we call the Quality of Transactions in The Pathfinder. The basic premise of this model is thesis that the closer you are to connections that are “hot” (e.g., someone high up in the organization is willing to go to bat for you) versus “cold” (no connections and a basic resume submitted), the more likely you are to have quality transactions that can result in getting you hired. Even somewhere in the “warm” range – maybe you know someone who knows someone in a position to job application help – is highly preferable to thesis coming in cold.

And create partners: Scan the connections of your connections on LinkedIn. Then follow up energetically (more on this in Section 7 on Digital Angles). TIP: There tends to research be higher scrutiny of career changers, so the extent to which you can gain traction within the tribe is parent thesis of fundamental importance. 5. THE JUICE: YOUR ASSERTIONS SECTION. In most cases, a great resume has two main sections. In the resume tips first, you make assertions about your abilities, qualities, and achievements. You write powerful, but honest, advertising copy that grabs the reader’s attention. (Exceptions to this are resumes targeting generally conservative fields such as law, science, or engineering.) The second section, the evidence section, is parent thesis where you back up your assertions with evidence that you actually did what you said you did. This is munro essays where you list and describe the jobs you’ve held, your education, etc. And if you have opted to pass on the undercover, an Assertions section, you have to dissertation org ua build a powerful evidence-based resume that builds the case for the undercover parent thesis you as a candidate – with especially compelling skills and albert einstein the world accomplishments summarized in the top half of the the undercover parent thesis first page. The real juice in your resume is what you assert about yourself right up front.

This is where you shine. Einstein Essay The World! The hard truth based on research: Only one interview is granted for parent every 200 resumes received by the average employer. Research also tells us that your resume will be quickly scanned, rather than read. Research Papers! You have only seconds to the undercover parent persuade a prospective employer to read further. The top half of the first page of your resume will either make or break your chances.

Ask yourself: What does the employer really want? How would you fill those shoes? What would set a truly exceptional candidate apart from research, a merely good one? If you are not sure what would make someone a superior candidate, you can gather intel from the job postings you see, and/or from people who work in the same company or the same field. You could even call the the undercover thesis prospective employer and job application letter ask them what they want. Don’t make wild guesses. Write down everything you have ever done that demonstrates that you’re the right fit for thesis the job and the prospective employer.

You don’t have to confine yourself to work-related accomplishments. TIP: Use your entire life as the palette to paint with. Job Application For It! The point is to cover all possible ways of thinking about and communicating what you do well. What are the talents you bring to the marketplace? If you are making a career change or are a new to the job market, you are going to have to be especially creative in getting across what makes you stand out.

This initial brainstorming focus will generate the the undercover parent thesis raw material from 2009 resume, which you craft your resume. So many resumes we see make a gallant effort to inform the parent reader. But we don’t want the albert essay the world employer to be informed; we want them to be interested and curious. In fact, it’s best to leave your reader with a few questions they would like to parent thesis ask you. In your assertions section, state your Objective – your intended job.

Ideally, your resume should convey why you are the dissertation org ua perfect candidate for parent one specific job or job title. Resume Tips! There is debate out the undercover there about for it officer, whether to state an Objective, but generally speaking, we think it’s a good idea. The Undercover Parent! If you’re in org ua, a creative field or have gained insights suggesting that the employer would prefer an outside-of-the-box approach, perhaps you forego an Objective. Keep it to the point, and keep the employer front and the undercover parent thesis center as your write. Consider this example. The owner of a small software company advertises for an experienced software salesperson. A week later they have 500 resumes. The applicants have a bewildering variety of essay as i, backgrounds, and the employer has no way of knowing whether any of them are really interested in selling software. Then the employer spots a resume that starts with the following: “OBJECTIVE – a software sales position in an organization seeking an extraordinary record of generating new accounts, exceeding sales targets and the undercover enthusiastic customer relations.” This is a fit . Bibliography! Not only the undercover thesis does this candidate want the job application letter officer job, they want to the undercover parent make a real contribution. Job-seekers often make the mistake of research papers, saying something like, “a position where I can hone my skill as a scissors sharpener.”

Examples follow. In all of these examples, the the undercover parent thesis underlined words and phrases could be interchanged with words and phrases relevant to your expertise, industry, and the type of role you are seeking. In this example, the statement is alice not preceded by the word “Objective.” Experienced IT professional offering more than five years of parent thesis, hands-on experience in programming , web development , and IT trouble-shooting , and seeks leadership role in alice essays, leading digital organization. In this example, you see a collection of brief descriptions versus a formally stated objective in a grammatically complete sentence. Strategic thinker and communicator . Expert storyteller . A decade of deadline -driven on-air reporting . Ready to pivot to executive producer role.

In this example, the applicant uses a first-person approach to a creative role. “If the client wants a logo people will remember, I give them one people will never forget. If they want their brand to communicate , I make it sing .” In this example, the job-seeker approaches a traditional job role with a traditional string of the undercover thesis, statements. CPA and CIA with 15 years of experience in dissertation, financial services for parent global organizations. Financial strategist with track record for onsidered and decisive recommendations , as well as thorough compliance with all federal, state, and internal regulations . Excels at individual as well as collaborative efforts.

Known for work ethic and integrity. In this example, you see a more traditional approach by a recent graduate seeking an entry-level role in a conventional job sector. OBJECTIVE: A starting position in an engineering organization where leading-edge skills and deep commitment to every project would be an asset to research papers the company and its people. TIP: The point of parent, using an Objective is to create a specific psychological response in the mind of the reader. Albert Essay As I See It! If you are making a career change or have a limited work history, you want the employer to immediately focus on where you are going, rather than where you have been. If you are looking for another job in your present field, it is more important to the undercover parent thesis stress your qualities, achievements and org ua abilities first. It is sometimes appropriate to include your Objective in the undercover, your Summary section rather than have a separate Objective section. The “Summary” or “Summary of Qualifications” consists of several concise statements that focus the reader’s attention on your most important qualities, achievements, and abilities. (NOTE: If you are on LinkedIn, it is important that the summary in your resume be reflected in alice munro, what you have in your LinkedIn summary.

You have a lot more space to work with in LinkedIn, so they needn’t match exactly, but they should be close enough that they show consistency. You should be recognizable as the parent thesis same person!) The things you mention should be the most compelling demonstrations of why you should be hired – not the other candidates. This is your brief window of opportunity to highlight your most impressive qualities – the spiciest part of your resume. In fact, this may be the only section fully read by the employer, so it must be strong and convincing. The Summary is the one place to include professional characteristics (highly energetic, a gift for dissertation org ua solving complex problems in a fast-paced environment, a natural salesperson, exceptional interpersonal skills, committed to excellence, etc.). Gear every word in the Summary to your goal: getting that interview. Here are the most common ingredients of a well-written Summary. A short phrase describing your profession Followed by a statement of broad or specialized expertise Followed by two or three additional statements related to any of the following: breadth or depth of skills unique mix of skills range of environments in which you have experience a special or well-documented accomplishment a history of thesis, awards, promotions, or superior performance commendations One or more professional or appropriate personal characteristics A sentence describing professional objective or interest. You would not necessarily use all these ingredients in alice, one Summary. Parent Thesis! Use the ones that highlight you best. The examples below show how to org ua include your objective in the Summary section.

TIP: If you are making a career change, your Summary section should show how what you have done in the past prepares you to do what you seek to the undercover do in einstein essay the world as i, the future. If you are new to the undercover thesis the job market, your Summary will be based more on ability than experience. To improve the bibliography chicago, prospect of completing on time, and avoiding procrastination, you need to: Your research plan should also include information about what equipment you will need to complete your project, and any travel costs or other expenses that you are likely to thesis, incur through the pursuit of your research. You should also think about whether you are dependent on any one else to complete your project, and alice munro essays think about what you are going to do if they are unable to help you. Once you have created your plan it is a good idea to show it to someone else. Ideally you will be able to show it to a member of academic staff or bring it to the Learning Development, but talking it over with a friend may also help you to spot anything that you have forgotten or anywhere that you have been unrealistic in your planning. Being organised and methodical while conducting your research. Although a dissertation is an opportunity for you to work independently, you will usually be allocated a member of the undercover parent thesis, academic staff as a supervisor. Supervisors are there to help you shape your ideas and papers on immigration give you advice on how to conduct the research for your dissertation. They are not there to teach you the topic you have chosen to investigate: this is your project. They are, however, one of the the undercover parent thesis, resources that you can call on during your research.

Academics are busy people, so to get the most out of your supervisor you will need to resume tips, be organised and to parent thesis, take responsibility for the relationship. It is not your supervisor’s job to chase you into completing your dissertation, or to tell you how to letter for it officer, manage the different stages of the project. To ensure that you get the most out of your supervisor you need to: If you are not happy with the way you are being supervised, explain why to your supervisor or discuss the the undercover, issue with your personal tutor. Regardless of research papers, whether you have been given a dissertation topic or you have developed your own ideas, you will need to be able to demonstrate the rationale for your research, and to describe how it fits within the parent thesis, wider research context in your area. Thesis? To support you in doing this you will need to undertake a literature review, which is a review of material that has already been published, either in hard copy or electronically, that may be relevant for your research project.

Key tools that are available to the undercover thesis, help you, include: It is a good idea to for it, make an appointment to see the librarian specialising in your subject. An information librarian should be able to give you advice on your literature search, and on how to manage the information that you generate. You will probably generate more references than you can read. Use the the undercover parent, titles and abstracts to decide whether the reference is bibliography worth reading in detail. Be selective by concentrating on references that: Once you start reading, ensure that you think about what you are trying to parent thesis, get out of each article or book that you read. Albert Einstein Essay The World? Your notes should enable you to write up your literature search without returning to the books you have read. Refer to the guides Effective Note Making, Referencing and Bibliographies, and Avoiding Plagiarism, for further help with note-making. For most research projects the data collection phase feels like the the undercover parent, most important part.

However, you should avoid jumping straight into this phase until you have adequately defined your research problem, and the extent and limitations of your research. If you are too hasty you risk collecting data that you will not be able to use. Consider how you are going to store and retrieve your data. You should set up a system that allows you to: There are many systems that support effective data collection and retrieval. These range from card indexes and cross-referenced exercise books, through electronic tools like spreadsheets, databases and bibliographic software, to discipline-specific tools. You should talk about how you plan to store your data with your supervisor, an information librarian, or a study adviser in resume, the Learning Development. Parent Thesis? As you undertake your research you are likely to come up with lots of essays, ideas. Parent? It can be valuable to keep a record of letter, these ideas on index cards, in a dedicated notebook, or in thesis, an electronic file. You can refer back to this ‘ideas store’ when you start to write. They may be useful as ideas in themselves, and may be useful as a record of how your thinking developed through the research process.

A pilot study involves preliminary data collection, using your planned methods, but with a very small sample. It aims to test out your approach, and identify any details that need to alice essays, be addressed before the main data collection goes ahead. The Undercover Parent? For example, you could get a small group to fill in albert essay the world see it, your questionnaire, perform a single experiment, or analyse a single novel or document. When you complete your pilot study you should be cautious about reading too much into the results that you have generated (although these can sometimes be interesting). The real value of your pilot study is what it tells you about your method. Spend time reflecting on the implications that your pilot study might have for your research project, and make the necessary adjustment to your plan. Even if you do not have the time or opportunity to run a formal pilot study, you should try and the undercover parent thesis reflect on your methods after you have started to generate some data. Once you start to generate data you may find that the dissertation, research project is not developing as you had hoped. Do not be upset that you have encountered a problem. Parent Thesis? Research is, by its nature, unpredictable.

Analyse the 2009 resume tips, situation. Think about what the problem is and thesis how it arose. Is it possible that going back a few steps may resolve it? Or is albert the world as i see it it something more fundamental? If so, estimate how significant the problem is to answering your research question, and try to calculate what it will take to thesis, resolve the situation. Changing the title is not normally the answer, although modification of some kind may be useful. If a problem is job application officer intractable you should arrange to meet your supervisor as soon as possible. The Undercover? Give him or her a detailed analysis of the problem, and always value their recommendations. The chances are they have been through a similar experience and can give you valuable advice.

Never try to ignore a problem, or hope that it will go away. Also don’t think that by seeking help you are failing as a researcher. Finally, it is worth remembering that every problem you encounter, and successfully solve, is potentially useful information in writing up your research. Letter For It Officer? So don’t be tempted to skirt around any problems you encountered when you come to the undercover parent thesis, write-up. Rather, flag up these problems and bibliography chicago show your examiners how you overcame them. As you conduct research, you are likely to realise that the topic that you have focused on is more complex than you realised when you first defined your research question. The Undercover? The research is still valid even though you are now aware of the alice essays, greater size and complexity of the problem.

A crucial skill of the researcher is to define clearly the boundaries of their research and to stick to them . You may need to refer to wider concerns; to a related field of literature; or to alternative methodology; but you must not be diverted into spending too much time investigating relevant, related, but distinctly separate fields. Starting to write up your research can be intimidating, but it is essential that you ensure that you have enough time not only to write up your research, but also to review it critically, then spend time editing and improving it. The following tips should help you to thesis, make the transition from research to writing: Remember that you can not achieve everything in your dissertation. A section where you discuss ‘Further Work’ at the end of your dissertation will show that you are thinking about the job application for it officer, implications your work has for the academic community.

Essay on The Undercover Parent - 406 …

The Pros and Cons of Music Lessons Via Skype or Google+ The age of virtual music lessons is here. The computer geek music teacher is parent, no longer the only type of teacher who gives distance lessons. Catherine Saint Louis wrote a good article yesterday in The New York Times (With Enough Bandwidth, Many Join the Band), and the enthusiasm of responses by readers shows that this subject is one that still carries a lot of novelty and excitement. Music teacher conferences such as MTNA’s national conference have offered technology sessions that address distance lessons for several years now.

Many teachers are doing it, and it’s filling a much-needed gap in society’s need for lessons, especially for students in papers on immigration rural areas who don’t have access to music teachers. I have taught students from Mexico to Tasmania using Skype. So far, I have yet to see any complete pros and the undercover, cons list regarding distance lessons, so to the best of my ability, I made my own. I feel that part of my duty to prospective distance students is to make sure they’re fully aware of all benefits and drawbacks of these types of job application letter lessons. First, the pros! Quality of the teacher: I believe it is better to have Skype lessons with an excellent teacher than it is to have in-person lessons with a mediocre teacher. Skype gives students even more options to parent, choose from when looking for thesis a teacher since they are not restricted to their small local region. Weekly Convenience: Students don’t have to travel 10 or 20 minutes to their teacher’s studio.

Also, when a student is 5 or 10 minutes late, I give them a courtesy call in case they forgot, but if they live 15 minutes away and parent, they have a 30 or even 45 minute lesson, it’s hardly worth it for them to papers on immigration, come late. The Undercover Parent Thesis. Lessons online means no missed lessons due to forgetfulness since the student and teacher can connect 30 seconds after the munro essays, courtesy call. The Undercover Thesis. Convenience of Recording Lessons: While students always have the papers on immigration, option to record their face-to-face lessons, that never happens (at least, in the history of parent my teaching). But students can easily record Skype and Google+ lessons for review at a later time with software like Evaer and SuperTinTin (audio only: Pamela, MP3 Skype Recorder, and VodBurner). Immediate Practicing: (added 1/13/12) While face-to-face students must drive home before practicing what they learned (which eats up time and tires people out), distance students can practice immediately after the lesson when ideas are fresh and bibliography, when energy levels are still high. (Thanks to the undercover parent, Joy Morin for pointing this out.) This is an extra practice session most students will get. The first practice session will always be of higher quality when it is thesis bibliography chicago, done immediately than if it were done the next day, and the first practice session is the most important session of the entire week. Siblings Don’t Have To Wait: (added 1/13/12) Kids can do their own thing while their siblings have lessons, while in the undercover thesis the private studio, they are held hostage until their siblings are done. Einstein Essay The World See It. Warming Up: Students can warm up at the undercover thesis, the piano before their lesson, only stopping seconds before the lesson begins.

The piano student also gets to research papers on immigration, play their own instrument. Thesis. This would let the job application letter for it officer, student show off their best playing to the undercover parent, their teacher each week instead of their worst. (This can also be seen as a con – see below.) Less off-task behaviors: According to this study in 2010, off-task behaviors took up 36% more time in face-to-face lessons than in distance lessons. I suspect part of this might be due to dissertation, an awkwardness factor that I think we all feel when talking through a webcam. It’s harder to parent, feel and act as we normally would in front of a webcam than it is when face-to-face. The study also finds that eye contact during distance lessons is more frequent, and this is probably for the same reason. Increased student performance: The same study indicates that students spend 22% more time performing during distance lessons than in face-to-face lessons.

Some Problems More Quickly Diagnosed: Sometimes the technical or musical problems students experience in their lesson can be an unexpected artifact of their unique instrument or practice environment at home. For example, perhaps the student is afraid to play too loud because of living in an apartment or because family members are asleep (both of chicago these scenarios describe a couple students I’ve taught before). These factors would come out immediately in a webcam lesson, but it might take a few face-to-face lessons for a teacher to figure out why the student doesn’t seem to ever “play out.” Don’t Have To Be In The Same Room: Students won’t need to cancel lessons because they had the the undercover thesis, stomach flu two days before (stomach flus can be contagious for up to two weeks after symptoms have passed). There is also less suffering for everyone: students won’t suffer if their teacher ate onion rings for lunch, and bagpipe teachers have the option of muting their computer speakers while their students play. No ability to physically work with hands: Sometimes the most efficient way to job application letter for it officer, achieve technical results with a students is to parent, physically manipulate their wrists, fingers, elbows, etc. Job Application. while their hands are at the keyboard. (Note: according to the study referenced above, touching hands occurred less than 1% of the total duration of the undercover thesis face-to-face lessons.) Dependent upon Internet connection: The student and thesis, teacher must both have a fast Internet connection, and even if they do, sometimes there are days when Internet backbones are lagging, ISPs are having trouble, etc., although that’s a rare occurrence. Family members at the student’s house (and at the teacher’s house) must refrain from using the Internet during the parent, lesson unless the Internet connection is extremely fast.

Glitches still happen sometimes with Skype and Google+. Sound quality: Even with a fast Internet connection, sound quality is not even remotely close to albert einstein, the quality of the undercover thesis a CD or even an audio cassette tape recording, let alone the quality of einstein as i hearing the student in person. Having said that, I feel that I’m still able to judge tone quality acceptably well. No recitals: A teacher with students scattered all over the place cannot expect students to buy a plane ticket once or twice a year to perform in a live recital. Group webcam sessions could be organized, but certainly not on thesis the scale of 30 students and 100 people in dissertation the audience. Videos could be e-mailed to parent thesis, the teacher and combined into one performance video simulating a recital, but being able to try as many times as they want to essays, get the “perfect” recording is not the same experience as having only thesis, one chance on stage to get it right. No teacher duets: Beginning method books all have duet parts written for teachers to play along with kids when they’ve finished their pieces.

This is not possible over a lagging webcam (and all webcam sessions experience lag). No student duets: Unless the Skyping teacher just happens to have two students of similar level who live with or near each other, students will not be able to have any duet experiences with each other, again because of webcam lag. 2009. Double sheet music copies: The teacher must always have their own copy of the music the the undercover parent, student uses. That means students can’t just spontaneously “bring in” music they’re learning – they must first e-mail it to the teacher, buy it for the teacher, or the teacher must obtain their own copy. No ability to thesis bibliography, point to student’s music: Sometimes the most efficient way to solve a rhythmic problem is to have the student “follow the bouncing pen” (teacher taps the student’s music much like the bouncing ball in some kids’ TV shows), and this would be impossible in a distance lesson. (Note: according to the study referenced above, pointing in the student’s music occurred less than 1% of the total duration of face-to-face lessons.) No ability to mark student’s music: Sometimes teachers must do a little editing in students’ music (marking in or circling finger numbers, changing dynamic/articulation markings, etc.), and occasionally they must do a lot of thesis editing (such as with an urtext Bach edition that has no articulation or dynamics marked). In this case teachers would have to mark their own copy and alice, e-mail it to the student, or if they don’t want to mark my copy (I prefer to keep my library “clean”), the the undercover thesis, student would have to alice essays, e-mail the teacher their music, the teacher would print it out and mark it up, then scan and e-mail it back to the student. (Note: according to the undercover thesis, the study referenced above, marking students’ music occurred less than 1% of the essay, total duration of face-to-face lessons.) No real-time coaching: Sometimes teachers help students count out loud by parent counting with them while they play, but sync issues over distance lessons will make this impossible. Sometimes a teacher might say, “Good.

Yes. Ok, louder now, and the world, now peak right here on this note,” etc. The Undercover Parent Thesis. as the student plays (perhaps even singing along sometimes to encourage certain dynamic or articulative expression), and this also becomes impossible. Thesis Bibliography. Music theory hassle: Students would need to hold their completed theory assignment up to the webcam, and their teacher will have to tell them what to circle and fix for next week. Some of my students are working in the undercover parent thesis The Practice of Harmony , a very heavy college theory textbook/workbook combo, and some of those pages can take a solid two or three minutes to correct (e.g., one page might have students identify 120 major, minor, augmented and diminished chords). In that case, the 2009 resume tips, students may need to parent, scan their homework each week and e-mail it to me. Teacher Modeling: According to the same study as referenced above, teacher modeling in face-to-face lessons occurred 28% more often than in distance lessons. Teacher modeling is what happens when a teacher demonstrates and the student strives to make themselves sound like the teacher. Looking from a different angle: Sometimes (but not very often), I will walk to the other side of the alice essays, piano in order to see what the student’s hands look like from the other side, in cases where I have to look specifically at the undercover thesis, the left hand thumb or the right hand pinky (my piano is to the left of my student piano).

Since I can’t do that in a distance lesson, students would have to reposition their webcams. Numbered measures: Both copies of the sheet music must always have numbered measures (except for very short beginning pieces that are only 8 or 16 measures long). No teacher accompanying: Advanced students who perform concertos will not be able to letter for it officer, benefit from thesis their teacher’s free accompanying in research recitals, festivals and competitions – they’ll have to thesis, hire a separate accompanist. Note-taking: The student must take notes in their notebook. Younger students (and especially very young students) are slow note-takers, which would make it necessary for the parent to take notes. Teachers could overcome this by typing the student’s practice goals each week into letter for it an e-mail to the student during the lesson (Microsoft OneNote on a tablet PC could be a good solution for this since OneNote combines writing and thesis, typing). Up-Front Cost: Students should purchase high-quality webcams so that the research, teacher can see as much detail as possible, and should probably consider purchasing a microphone as well, such as the Yeti Blue Microphone. Warming Up: It could be seen as a bad thing that the thesis, student has their lesson immediately after warming up, because almost every performance situation students encounter (whether playing at munro, the homes of friends and family or playing in recitals) involves playing when not warmed up. Traditional lessons simulate this experience every week. Similarly, playing on the teacher’s piano gives students the valuable experience of adjusting to the undercover parent thesis, different instruments, which is what happens at alice, others’ homes, recitals, festivals and competitions.

Distractions: (added 4/16/12) Students may be more distracted at home by noises made by siblings, animals, neighbors, etc. (Thanks to Lyle Compton for pointing this out in a comment below.) It’s worth noting that these last two points (warming up and distractions) would also apply to the face-to-face teacher who travels to students’ homes. Both Google+ and the undercover parent, Skype are free, and both offer the ability to research papers, connect to thesis, multiple people at the same time. This presents the possibility of going over music theory, music history, etc. with a group of students at the same time. This is munro essays, also why “No Group Lessons” did not make it onto the cons list above: with Google+ Hangouts or Skype group calls, teachers can put together group sessions in thesis which students can perform live for each other. Research Papers On Immigration. That said, I think Skype still has better control over echo effects caused by parent thesis having your speaker turned up past a certain volume, which makes your chat partner hear their own voice as an echo. It’s also worth noting that piano lessons take up more “room” spatially than harmonica or oboe lessons since they involve the alice munro, full length of a keyboard. A harmonica teacher only parent thesis, needs to see the org ua, face of the player, while a piano teacher needs to see the the undercover thesis, entire body and keyboard from a good angle. They need to get a good view of the pedals, and the webcam needs to thesis chicago, be placed sufficiently above the keyboard so that arms don’t get in the way of hands. I will definitely add to the undercover parent thesis, this list if any reader comments point out munro essays factors I may have overlooked.

The most personally relevant drawbacks for me in giving Skype lessons are the following: Draining: Everything takes more energy over Skype than in the undercover parent person. If the student starts playing in the wrong measure, I have to research papers on immigration, verbally describe where to start. The Undercover. Things that would only take a couple seconds in an in-person lesson take 15, 20 or 30 seconds when working over Skype, and this effect is felt throughout the entire lesson. It also didn’t help that I had to dissertation org ua, do a lot of prep work before each lesson, turning on the undercover the laptop on the piano, setting up the webcam, bringing up my e-mail to bibliography, see theory assignments and print out the undercover parent thesis sheet music, etc. Audio normalization: Skype is not designed for music, it is designed for speech. On Immigration. Quiet speech is the undercover, amplified to a normal volume, and loud speech is de-amplified to a normal volume. Audio engineers know this as “normalization”, and this is the worst thing you can possibly do to music. I can still tell the difference between piano and forte, but hearing the difference between mezzo-forte and forte, or piano and pianissimo, takes a level of conscious focus on my part that is taxing.

I have to concentrate so much on the timbre of the piano instead of being able to just rely on munro essays the decibel level like we can do in real life, and this distracts me from thinking about bigger issues in the music. Duplex and lag awkwardness: In telecommunications, duplex is the the undercover thesis, type of connection that is required to allow parties to transmit audio data at the same time. Unfortunately, Skype is only half-duplex. In real life, when two people start to talk, they quickly stop and resume tips, figure out the undercover thesis who should go. When it happens over Skype, only one of the people is heard.

They must finish speaking before they can be interrupted. Skype lag complicates this further, because if you need to 2009, stop someone, they get your message delayed, and because they’re transmitting, they may not get your message at all. And it’s kind of funny when both people are trying to figure out who should talk first: they both see that each other is parent thesis, patiently silent, so they both decide to talk. Alice Essays. But since they are seeing an image that is anywhere between 0.5 and parent thesis, 4 seconds delayed, they don’t realize that they both started to job application, talk at the same time until these seconds have passed. Of course, nearly all the “cons” in the above list are felt as well, and it is the accumulation of all these limitations that make Skype lessons so much more challenging than in-person lessons. I especially notice the decrease in the undercover parent my own “teacher modeling” to students. Because of all the dissertation, extra time and energy required to accomplish things in Skype lessons, I always have a sense of needing to be as fast and efficient as possible, leaving less time for demonstration.

There may also be a small part of me that believes the modeling would be less helpful when they’re hearing me demonstrate through Skype rather than hearing it in person. Having said that, I’ve done Skype lessons at thesis, a very advanced level before (with good supporting technology and fast Internet connections), as well as with an early intermediate adult, and it felt doable. For reasons that I will outline in great detail in a distant blog post, advanced students are easier to work with than beginners. Perhaps the added ease of albert einstein as i see it working with an the undercover thesis advanced student counteracts a lot of the extra energy needed to albert the world as i see it, make the limitations of distance lessons work. What a thorough list! I’ve only one addition to the undercover, suggest for the PRO list: My students have found that they like being able to practice right after the lesson while things are fresh. I used to do this at college at the suggestion of my professor. Our private students can’t do this if they have a commute home to make after the lesson. But Skype/Google+ students can!

Yes, of course! That’s a big one. 2009. Thanks, and the undercover, I’ll credit you for thinking of it. Distraction, in the form of a TV or sound system playing in another room, siblings running and dissertation, shouting elsewhere in the home while the student tries to concentrate, babies crying, even cooking smells drifting in to make the mouth water, pets wandering in and demanding attention or feeding, all are potential downsides to teaching in a student’s home.
