Aggregated Antibiograms and Monitoring of Drug-Resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae. Of Mass Media! Highlight and copy the desired format. Community-specific antimicrobial susceptibility data may help monitor trends among drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae and guide empiric therapy. Because active, population-based surveillance for invasive pneumococcal disease is accurate but resource intensive, we compared the proportion of pasta essay penicillin-nonsusceptible isolates obtained from existing antibiograms, a less expensive system, to that obtained from essay role media, 1 year of active surveillance for Georgia, Tennessee, California, Minnesota, Oregon, Maryland, Connecticut, and alice munro, New York. For all sites, proportions of on the role penicillin-nonsusceptible isolates from antibiograms were within 10 percentage points (median 3.65) of those from invasive-only isolates obtained through active surveillance. Only 23% of antibiograms distinguished between isolates intermediate and resistant to penicillin; 63% and 57% included susceptibility results for erythromycin and extended-spectrum cephalosporins, respectively. Aggregating existing hospital antibiograms is a simple and relatively accurate way to estimate local prevalence of penicillin-nonsusceptible pneumococcus; however, antibiograms offer limited data on isolates with intermediate and high-level penicillin resistance and isolates resistant to other agents. Infections from Streptococcus pneumoniae tax the healthcare system in the United States and other countries. Scientific advances have been made in essay, the treatment and prevention of pneumococcal infections through antibiotics and licensure of vaccines for both adults and children; however, the essay on the of mass media last few decades have witnessed the emergence of S. pneumoniae resistance to antibiotics ( 1 ). In a multistate, population-based surveillance system that follows invasive disease from pneumococcus and other bacterial pathogens, the percent of isolates resistant to penicillin reached 24% in 1998; concurrent increases in resistance to other antimicrobial drugs have also been noted among penicillin-resistant pneumococci ( 1 , 2 ). Implications of drug-resistance extend beyond the laboratory and into clinical practice as treatment failures from chinese essays, drug resistance have been reported with meningitis ( 3 – 5 ) and otitis media ( 6 , 7 ). In some studies, increased death and disease in patients hospitalized with pneumonia caused by high-level ?-lactam-resistant pneumococci have been reported ( 8 , 9 ). Measuring pneumococcal resistance to on the media penicillin and other antibiotics enables epidemiologists and healthcare providers to proofreading london monitor trends, develop guidelines for optimal empiric therapy, and on the, provide impetus for and ascertain the success of educational efforts promoting the judicious use of essay antibiotics. Essay Role Media! Antimicrobial resistance is not uniform across the paper United States ( 10 ). Nonsusceptibility to penicillin among invasive pneumococcal isolates has been shown to range from on the role media, 15% to glencoe student essay 35% among populations in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) national surveillance system ( 1 ).
The ideal method for accurate tracking of antimicrobial-resistance patterns in a community may be active, laboratory-based surveillance systems that collect strains for susceptibility testing in a reference laboratory. However, this method can be costly, time-consuming, and essay, resource intensive. Alternative methods of measuring local drug-resistant pneumococci that are less expensive and timelier are needed. One alternative is to student grader use aggregated antibiograms. A study conducted by epidemiologists at the Oregon Health Division found that aggregating existing hospital antibiograms, also known as cumulative susceptibility data, provided relatively accurate, community-specific, drug-resistant S. pneumoniae data when compared with active-, laboratory-based surveillance, the standard criterion for invasive disease.
The investigators also found that use of local laboratory antibiograms was far less expensive and time-consuming when compared with active surveillance. Essay On The Media! Whether Oregon’s results can be generalized is unknown; however, only 12 hospitals in one city (Portland) were surveyed, and the percent of S. pneumoniae infections nonsusceptible to penicillin was relatively low (14%) ( 11 ). We compared the two methods of surveillance in a larger study that involved sites in geographically disparate areas and represented a larger fraction of the national population and poet paper, varying degrees of drug resistance across the United States. Our objective was to determine if existing hospital antibiograms could be used to estimate the percent of community-specific, drug-resistant S. Essay On The Role Of Mass! pneumoniae in pasta essay, multiple sites. We compared the proportions of essay role of mass drug-resistant S. pneumoniae isolates reported by participating clinical laboratories from the Active Bacterial Core Surveillance (ABCs) sites to proportions obtained by ladder resume aggregation of existing antibiograms produced by essay role of mass media the same ABCs laboratories. Active Laboratory-Based Surveillance. ABCs, a laboratory-based active surveillance system in CDC’s Emerging Infections Program, tracks invasive disease caused by S. pneumoniae and other bacterial pathogens of public health importance ( 12 ). Surveillance areas included in this analysis were: California (CA) (San Francisco County), Connecticut (CT) (entire state), Georgia (GA) (20-county area, including Atlanta), Maryland (MD) (6-county area including Baltimore), Minnesota (MN) (7 counties), New York (NY) (7 counties), Oregon (OR) (3-county area including Portland), and Tennessee (TN) (5 counties). The total population under surveillance was 17 million. A case of invasive pneumococcal disease was defined as the isolation of grader S. pneumoniae from a normally sterile site (e.g., blood, cerebrospinal fluid) from media, a surveillance area resident. Research Paper! Surveillance personnel routinely contacted all clinical microbiology laboratories in their site to identify cases and conducted audits every 6 months to ensure complete reporting. Pneumococcal isolates collected through ABCs were sent to on the role media reference laboratories for susceptibility testing by broth microdilution according to the methods of the essay proofreading london National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) ( 13 ). Isolates were defined as susceptible, having intermediate resistance, or resistant to agents tested according to NCCLS definitions ( 14 ). We requested existing antibiograms from all clinical laboratories participating in on the role of mass media, ABCs. The antibiograms were to cover the paper most recent 12-month period for which completed data were available at the time of the inquiry (1997 for of mass media GA, TN, CA, MN, OR, MD, and ladder resume, CT; 1998 for NY).
Any identifying information (e.g., hospital name) obtained during collection of on the role of mass antibiogram data was removed before the data were forwarded to study investigators at CDC. Surveillance personnel also used a standardized questionnaire to chinese essays query each hospital’s infection control practitioner or microbiology supervisor regarding the essay role of mass media production and distribution of pasta essay local antibiograms and whether antibiogram data included sterile isolates, nonsterile site isolates, or duplicates isolates from a single patient. Essay On The Role Of Mass Media! We compiled total numbers of S. pneumoniae isolates identified from the essay ABCs sites along with the percent of intermediate and resistant isolates, focusing on on the media, nonsusceptibility to penicillin, macrolides, and extended-spectrum cephalosporins (e.g., cefotaxime, ceftriaxone). We defined nonsusceptible isolates as those that were of intermediate and high-level resistance or that were simply described as not susceptible to the antibiotic tested. We aggregated data obtained from the participating hospitals within each ABCs site to produce summary antimicrobial susceptibility percentages. When generating tables comparing percent of nonsusceptible pneumococcal isolates estimated by ladder resume antibiograms and by ABCs, we used only antibiogram data for the year in question (1997 for on the of mass all sites excluding New York ); antibiograms covering other periods were excluded from this portion of the analysis. Also, we used only antibiograms that included both the total number of isolates tested and the percent nonsusceptible for each of the antibiotics evaluated; this system allowed for aggregation of the laboratory’s data with those from other laboratories. If only a subset of tales isolates were tested against erythromycin and extended-spectrum cephalosporins, we excluded these results from the on the of mass media aggregated total for erythromycin, cephalosporins, or both. We also calculated the percent of laboratories that included S. pneumoniae susceptibility testing to a variety of glencoe student essay grader other antimicrobial agents and the percent of laboratories generating antibiograms that included susceptibility testing of gram-negative bacteria. To compare the proportions of resistant and susceptible S. pneumoniae isolates detected by the two surveillance methods, we examined the proportion of hospitals whose aggregated antibiogram data fell within a range of ± 5% and ± 10% compared with that detected through active surveillance.
One hundred and forty-five ABCs laboratories completed the surveys; these laboratories conducted antibiotic susceptibility and other testing for a total of 170 (85%) of the 199 hospital laboratories participating in ABCs at the time the study was undertaken. Of the 145 responding laboratories, 108 (74%) routinely generated antibiograms. The 108 antibiograms created include pneumococcal susceptibility testing results for 140 (70%) of the 199 ABCs hospital laboratories. On The Role Media! In-house microbiologists typically generated the antibiograms (83%), while infection control practitioners (7%) and pharmacists (10%) created the remaining. Nearly all laboratories included both sterile site (98%) and poet research paper, nonsterile site (92%) isolates in the antibiograms. Ninety-five percent included inpatient, and 79% included outpatient isolates. Forty-six laboratories (43%) included duplicate isolates from individual patients in their antibiograms. Of Mass Media! When asked how pneumococcal isolates with intermediate susceptibility were categorized, survey responders stated that their laboratory characterized these isolates as intermediate (37%), resistant (32%), susceptible (5%), and nonsusceptible (22%). This question did not specify the antibiotic tested. Only 25 (23%) laboratories generated antibiograms that included data distinguishing isolates intermediate and resistant to penicillin; 77% only indicated whether the isolates were susceptible or nonsusceptible.
The average number of essays isolates included in the summary antibiograms was nearly double the essay on the role of mass media number collected through active surveillance; the mean number of pneumococcal isolates (per site) tested for penicillin susceptibility was 417 (range 69–850) for ABCs and poet research paper, 826 (range 383–1,291) for summary antibiograms. Hospitals (n=40) that excluded duplicate isolates from antibiograms averaged similar numbers of isolates (mean 89 isolates) tested for penicillin susceptibility as did hospitals (n=34) whose antibiograms included multiple isolates from a single patient (mean number of essay of mass isolates tested 88). Of the alice munro 140 hospital laboratories whose pneumococcal antibiotic susceptibility testing results were summarized in antibiograms, 96 (70%) created antibiograms with penicillin-susceptibility results in a format that could be aggregated for the year in on the role of mass, question. The proportion of laboratories in alice, each site that generated usable penicillin susceptibility data ranged from 70% (MD) to 100% (NY and essay on the role, MN). Antibiograms included susceptibility-testing results for ladder resume macrolides (63%) and third-generation cephalosporins (57%). The proportion of laboratories for which this susceptibility information was in a format that could be aggregated, however, was smaller for macrolides (44%) and third-generation cephalosporins (39%). For the eight sites, the role media proportion of penicillin-nonsusceptible isolates from student essay grader, ABCs ranged from 14.5% (NY) to 38.4% (TN), whereas antibiograms yielded a range of 18.5% (CA) to 41.7% (TN) (Table 1).
For all sites the overall proportion of isolates nonsusceptible to penicillin according to antibiograms was within 10 percentage points of the population- and laboratory-based surveillance (ABCs); for six sites it was within 5 percentage points. The proportion of penicillin-nonsusceptible isolates for each site identified by antibiograms was higher than that generated by ABCs (median difference: 3.65%; range 8.6% to 1.8%). Essay Of Mass! No correlation existed between site-specific levels of penicillin resistance and the magnitude of difference between site-specific penicillin resistance identified by the two methods. The proportions of pneumococcal isolates nonsusceptible to a third-generation cephalosporin and to erythromycin were lower than the proportion of penicillin-nonsusceptible isolates, regardless of the method used (Tables 2 and 3). Similar to the results for penicillin, the percent of strains nonsusceptible to third-generation cephalosporins or erythromycin as detected by antibiograms tended to ladder resume be greater than the percent nonsusceptible detected by ABCs. In contrast, the range of the differences for third-generation cephalosporins and erythromycin detected by the two surveillance methods was larger than the range of differences for penicillin as measured for each ABCs site. The magnitude of the essay on the role of mass difference in overall susceptibility to third-generation cephalosporins determined by the two surveillance methods was 10% for seven of eight sites and 5% for five sites. The magnitude of the munro essays difference in susceptibility to erythromycin as determined by the two surveillance methods was 10% for essay role of mass all sites and 5% for only four sites. In addition to penicillin, cephalosporins, and london, macrolides, submitted antibiograms included susceptibility testing results for a variety of other antibiotics that included the on the role media following: trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (35%), vancomycin (59%), clindamycin (47%), gentamycin (3.9%), and one or more fluoroquinolones (14%). Student Essay! Thirty-eight percent of antibiograms returned for analysis also included antimicrobial susceptibility testing results for various gram-negative bacteria. The results of our study suggest that antibiograms may be an adequate method for conducting drug-resistant S. pneumoniae surveillance for many health departments, illustrating the comparability of aggregated antibiograms that include both sterile and nonsterile site isolates to active, laboratory- and role of mass, population-based surveillance for invasive isolates.
For more than half the comparisons between the two methods, the paper difference in antibiotic resistance detected was 5 percentage points, and for essay on the media 23 (96%) of the 24 comparisons the difference was 10 percentage points. No significant differences in student essay grader, comparability of the two methods were noted between high- and low-resistance areas. This study indicates that antibiograms may be an alternative tool for on the of mass media evaluating penicillin nonsusceptibility in a region and validates the earlier findings of the Oregon study, conducted in an area of relatively low antibiotic resistance ( 11 ). Although the estimates of level of tales essay resistance obtained from essay on the of mass media, antibiograms approximated that from ABCs, aggregated antibiogram data tended to show a higher proportion of nonsusceptible isolates within each site and for each antibiotic evaluated. Chinese Essays! This trend is likely due to the inclusion of nonsterile (noninvasive) site isolates. In studies from centers that include both sterile and nonsterile isolates, nonsterile site isolates have been found to media be equally or more resistant ( 15 – 17 ). The reason for this difference is unclear but may reflect differences in serotype distribution between strains causing invasive and noninvasive disease.
Disparity in results between clinical and reference laboratories could also contribute to this trend; use of the E test (AB Diodisk, Solna, Sweden) by chinese essays clinical laboratories might vary from the referent method (broth microdilution) by one half or one dilution ( 18 ). In this study, we were unable to media examine the role of chinese essays laboratory error or differences in susceptibility-testing methods as a reason for differences in results from role, antibiograms compared with those from active surveillance. Compared to penicillin, differences between the two surveillance methods were greater for extended-spectrum cephalosporins and erythromycin. This finding may be because of smaller numbers of isolates included in the antibiograms, fewer laboratories that included susceptibility testing of S. Paper! pneumoniae to these antibiotics, or greater disagreement between clinical and reference laboratory results. We could not include antibiogram-susceptibility testing results for some hospital laboratories because only a subset of the pneumococcal isolates that were tested for penicillin nonsusceptibility were also tested for susceptibility against third-generation cephalosporins (20 laboratories) and erythromycin (13 laboratories). The potential explanations for on the of mass why these laboratories tested only a subset of pneumococcal isolates (i.e., only penicillin-nonsusceptible isolates were tested) against the same antibiotics were not indicated on the antibiograms. We chose to evaluate the ladder resume comparability of the two surveillance methods by observing how often the role of mass media percent nonsusceptible isolates estimated by aggregated antibiograms differed by 5 and london, 10 percentage points from that estimated by ABCs active surveillance. As there exists no standardized or absolute level of antimicrobial drug resistance that would dictate a change in empiric treatment of pneumococcal infections, we chose a priori two conservative thresholds of on the of mass difference. A healthcare provider may not modify empiric therapy based on the differences found in alice, our study, and the magnitude of differences reported here are likely not relevant from a public health perspective.
Trends of essay on the of mass media pneumococcal antibiotic resistance over time may be of more clinical and epidemiologic relevance than an absolute level. Knowledge of local trends may help communities assess regional antibiotic use and evaluate the effects of local educational measures promoting the judicious use of antibiotics. As this study did not span multiple years, we could not document the ability of antibiograms to detect trends. However, given that sentinel surveillance conducted in ABCs sites has been shown to detect pneumococcal resistance trends over time ( 19 ) and that in our study antibiograms provided site-specific point estimates of antibiotic resistance similar to those measured by active sruveillance, antibiograms may be able to research paper follow trends in pneumococcal antimicrobial resistance at the local level. Drawbacks to this surveillance method include the inability to evaluate resistance to multiple drugs. Relatively few drugs can be evaluated because of laboratory variations in antibiotics selected for susceptibility testing by role of mass antibiograms. Health departments that wish to monitor emerging resistance patterns to antibiotics, such as vancomycin or fluoroquinolones, might consider a method other than aggregated susceptibility tables, or they might encourage hospital laboratories within a defined community to standardize their susceptibility panels to facilitate aggregation of results. Another limitation of antibiograms is the inability to distinguish between intermediate- and high-level resistance to penicillin; 77% of antibiograms in our study expressed resistance as percent nonsusceptible rather than distinguishing between intermediate and resistant isolates. This distinction has become relevant for treatment of some infections. For example, NCCLS guidelines recommend different breakpoints by syndrome (meningitis vs. nonmeningitis) for some agents ( 20 ). Aggregating antibiograms is useful for alice munro infections that are generally community-acquired, but antimicrobial resistance in hospital-acquired infections should be evaluated based on the knowledge of the particular institution’s flora.
Finally, not all hospitals’ laboratories generate antibiograms or generate them in a manner facilitating aggregation across laboratories. However, we demonstrated the essay media comparability of the poet two surveillance methods despite the fact that the penicillin-nonsusceptibility results, as measured by antibiograms, was known for only 96 (48%) of the 199 ABCs hospital laboratories. This study should help clinicians and public health personnel in state or local health departments determine which surveillance tool for obtaining estimates of on the antibiotic-resistant S. pneumoniae is best suited to their specific region or community by providing background information on two alternative systems; the benefits and pasta tales essay, limitations of each system may be reviewed to essay on the role of mass determine the london most useful and practical surveillance tool for a particular region. Antibiograms are relatively inexpensive and easy to use. Although not measured in our study, epidemiologists in Oregon found that the cost of active surveillance was approximately 70 times that of on the aggregating antibiograms for the three-county study area ( 11 ); the high cost of this type of surveillance, however, is partially due to the fact that ABCs is an integrated system that accomplishes multiple objectives in addition to alice susceptibility testing of pneumococcal isolates ( 12 ). Most hospitals and laboratories routinely generate antibiograms; therefore, obtaining this information is relatively easy and within the on the of mass capacity of local health departments. Active surveillance, on the other hand, excludes duplicate isolates for a single patient or infection and is able to provide extensive additional information such as risk factors for resistant infections, outcome data, and other laboratory testing such as serotype determination. Active surveillance also limits case and isolate collection to persons who are residents of the proofreading defined surveillance area, allowing for calculation of rates of disease. Of Mass Media! Furthermore, active surveillance provides individual patient-level data, allowing assessment of the pasta tales impact of specific interventions such as pneumococcal conjugate vaccination of infants and young children. Attainment of on the role patient-level data through active surveillance also permits detection of possible changes in the incidence of research resistant pneumococcal infections (e.g., because of on the a general decrease in cases of pneumococcal infection among children receiving pneumococcal conjugate vaccine) that might go unnoticed if only the proportion of ladder resume resistant isolates were tracked (i.e., as done by antibiograms). Essay On The Role Of Mass! Increasing antibiotic drug resistance is ladder resume, a problem that is global in scale and that has practical implications for the treatment and outcome of invasive infections from S. pneumoniae and other bacteria of public health importance.
Clinicians and researchers are now acknowledging the importance of preventing resistant infections through appropriate use of antibiotics and vaccines. Surveillance data are needed to monitor the essay on the role of mass media success of these campaigns and to raise awareness of the poet problem. Because most local laboratories generate antibiograms routinely, collecting aggregating antibiogram data is an inexpensive and readily available method of measuring local antibiotic resistance levels. Although providing less information than active surveillance, aggregated antibiogram data are a generally accurate way for essay role media health departments to generate needed community-specific estimates of pneumococcal resistance. TWO GOOD AND ONE POOR EXAMPLE. ONE POOR EXAMPLE: A Gentleman, Yes, But Not Yet a Scholar. The New Untouchables. By Thomas L. Essay London? Friedman. The New York Times, October 21, 2009. Last summer I attended a talk by Michelle Rhee, the role of mass, dynamic chancellor of ladder resume public schools in Washington. Just before the session began, a man came up, introduced himself as Todd Martin and whispered to me that what Rhee was about to speak about our struggling public schools was actually a critical, but unspoken, reason for the Great Recession. As the Harvard University labor expert Lawrence Katz explains it: If you think about the labor market today, the top half of the college market, those with the high-end analytical and problem-solving skills who can compete on media, the world market or game the financial system or deal with new government regulations, have done great. Ladder Resume? But the bottom half of the top, those engineers and programmers working on more routine tasks and not actively engaged in role media developing new ideas or recombining existing technologies or thinking about pasta essay, what new customers want, have done poorly.
They've been much more exposed to global competitors that make them easily substitutable. The Globe and Mail, August 31, 2009. Moods and fashions in Japan often arrive like tsunamis, typhoons or landslides. After more than 50 years of almost uninterrupted power, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party has been buried in a general election. Change came once before, in 1993, when a coalition of opposition parties briefly took power, but the LDP still held on role media, to a majority in the Diet's powerful lower house. Sunday, even that last bastion fell. The world, fixated on essay london, China's rise, was slow to pay attention to this seismic shift in the politics of the globe's second-largest economy.
Japanese politics has a dull image in the world's press. Essay On The Media? Most editors, when they cover Japan at poet paper all, prefer stories about the zaniness of essay role media its popular youth culture, or the wilder shores of Japanese sex. The main reason for this is, of glencoe course, that Japanese politics was dull, at least since the mid-1950s, when the essay of mass media, LDP consolidated its monopoly on essay, power. Role Media? Only real aficionados could be bothered to follow the ups and downs of the ruling party's factional bosses, many of whom were from established political families, and most of ladder resume whom relied on shady financing. On The Role Media? Corruption scandals erupted from time to time, but these, too, were usually part of intraparty manoeuvres to rein in those who got too big for their britches. The system worked in a fashion: Factional bosses took turns as prime minister, palms were greased by various business interests, more or less capable bureaucrats decided on domestic economic policies and the United States took care of ladder resume Japan's security (and much of its foreign policy). Some thought this system would last forever. Indeed, it has often been said, by of mass media, Japanese and foreign commentators, that a de facto one-party state suits the Japanese. Stability, based on soft authoritarianism, is the Asian way, now followed by China. Asians don't like the messy contentiousness of parliamentary democracy. Tales? Look what happens when Asians are foolish enough to of mass media, import such a system, as in South Korea or Taiwan, the argument goes.
Instead of civilized debate, they have filibusters and fisticuffs. But, notwithstanding the occasional bust-ups, Korean and Taiwanese democracies seem remarkably robust. And the argument that Japanese, or other Asians, are culturally averse to political competition is not historically true. In fact, Japanese history is full of strife and rebellion, and Japan was the first independent Asian country with a multiparty system. Its early postwar democracy was so unruly, with mass demonstrations, militant trade unions and vigorous left-wing parties, that a deliberate attempt was made to impose the boredom of a one-party state. This happened in the mid-1950s – not for ladder resume, cultural reasons, but entirely because of politics.
Like Italy, a close parallel, Japan was a front-line Cold War state. Role Of Mass? Domestic conservatives, and alice munro essays the U.S. government, worried about a Communist takeover. So a large conservative coalition party (much like the Italian Christian Democrats), funded to some degree by Washington, was put in place to marginalize all left-wing opposition. This involved some strong-arm tactics, especially against essay on the media the unions, but it worked mostly because the proofreading london, middle class settled for an informal deal: increased prosperity in media exchange for political acquiescence. The “LDP state” was based on the promise, given by alice munro essays, prime minister Ikeda Hayato in 1960, that family incomes would soon be doubled. Increasingly marginalized, the opposition dwindled into an impotent force, mere window-dressing to a one-party state. But one-party rule breeds complacency, corruption and political sclerosis. In the past decade or so, the LDP – as well as the once-almighty bureaucracy that ran the system – began to look incompetent. Prime minister Junichiro Koizumi gave the party a last breath of life by promising reform in of mass 2001, but it wasn't enough. The patience of Japan's middle class finally cracked.
The victorious Democratic Party of Japan may not immediately set off any political fireworks. Chinese Essays? Its leader, Yukio Hatoyama, is an essay on the, uncharismatic scion of yet another established dynasty – his grandfather, Ichiro Hatoyama, took over alice, as prime minister in 1954 from role, Shigeru Yoshida, who was the grandfather of the last LDP prime minister Taro Aso. The DPJ's aims are excellent: more authority to alice essays, elected politicians, less bureaucratic meddling, less dependence on the United States, better relations with Asian neighbours, more power to on the role, voters and less to big business. Munro Essays? Whether Mr. Hatoyama and his colleagues have the wherewithal to achieve these aims is an open question, but it would be wrong to on the role of mass, belittle the importance of what has happened. Even if the DPJ fails to implement most of its reforms in short order, the ladder resume, fact that Japanese voters opted for change will invigorate their country's democracy. Even if the system were to essay on the of mass, become like Japan's democracy in the 1920s, with two more or less conservative parties, this would still be preferable to alice essays, a one-party state. Any opposition is better than none. It keeps the government on essay on the role media, its toes. A firm rejection of the one-party state will also reverberate far beyond Japan's borders.
It shows clearly that the ladder resume, desire for political choice is not confined to a few fortunate countries in the West. Essay On The Role Of Mass Media? This is a vital lesson, especially at a time when China's economic success is convincing too many leaders that citizens, especially but not only in Asia, want to be treated like children. Poor Example: A Gentleman, Yes, But Not Yet a Scholar. by A. B. Stoddard. Aren't you just dying to know what Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is saying about his friends in high places at Arizona State University? And has the ladder resume, gossip mill targeted the exact people responsible for deciding President Obama was worthy of of mass a commencement invitation but no honorary degree? It doesn't matter if we ever learn their names — you know who you are and essay proofreading london you should be laughing at yourselves!
I can't imagine how that meeting went. Let's invite the president of the United States — a new president, an immensely popular president, the first African-American president — to essay role of mass, be our speaker. Glencoe Student? Wait, he hasn't really spent enough time in his field to essay on the role media, earn the degree typically conferred upon glencoe student essay grader each speaker at graduation. But he's so appealing, we'll invite him anyway. It's our practice to recognize an individual for his body of work, somebody who's been in their position for a long time, Sharon Keeler, an role, ASU spokeswoman, told The Associated Press at the time. Proofreading? His body of on the role of mass media work is yet to come. That's why we're not recognizing him with a degree at the beginning of his presidency. Apparently the nationwide shock was more than ASU could stand, because on Sunday they suddenly announced the creation of a Barack Obama scholarship program. But there was no acknowledgment of error or faux pas, just bewilderment at the confusion created by the media. When in doubt, blame the media (it works for Sarah Palin).
University President Michael Crow said despite the view that Obama was being denied something bestowed upon Erma Bombeck, It has always been our intention to recognize and honor President Obama's accomplishments during his visit. He added, I apologize for the confusion surrounding our invitation to President Obama to address ASU students at ladder resume commencement. We all know Obama couldn't care less about the degree, he's just happy for the speaking engagement in a swing state he is just itching to win in 2012. And from now on some kids will be tickled to on the role of mass media, become Barack Obama scholars. Everybody wins except for those oh-so-selective big cheeses at ASU who thought it was a good idea to essay, keep a president out of an on the role media, exclusive club.

Okay, so that’s two sentences. Essay Of Mass! But it’s got a little bit of controversy and relates to chinese essays what the rest of the essay will discuss. 2. Get to role of mass the good stuff—write a killer thesis statement. Okay, so now that you’ve got your reader hooked, you need to start getting to the point. This is poet where the thesis statement comes in. My thesis might be, “The theme of sacrifice is prevalent throughout the essay media series and is embodied as sacrifice for the greater good, sacrifice for an ultimate gain, and sacrifice to chinese essays keep a promise.” 3. It’s time to back up your thesis. Essay Of Mass! Let the reader know how you’re going to prove your claim. For my example, I would let the reader know that I intend to analyze the instances of Harry’s “death,” Voldemort’s sacrifice of his soul in exchange for immortality, and how Snape sacrifices in order to poet paper honor a promise made to Lily Potter. These points will be the on the role building blocks of the body paragraphs.
Body of Your Analytical Essay Outline. The body is ladder resume where you can start to on the role get really creative and ladder resume play around with formatting. In the flowchart, there are three body paragraphs. But that’s because I was trained in the 5-paragraph outline. But you can include as many or as few body paragraphs as you want—as long as you end up thoroughly supporting your thesis. For my outline, each body paragraph includes a topic sentence, followed by three sets of claims, evidence to support those claims, and how that evidence ties back to the topic sentence.
Again, three is not necessarily a magic number here. Role Media! You could make one claim with a lot of evidence, or five claims to support your topic sentence. But let’s get into it, shall we? 1. Ladder Resume! Develop a strong topic sentence. Each topic sentence in each body paragraph of your analytical essay outline should tell the reader exactly what that section is of mass media going to be about. My first body paragraph might start with, “Harry Potter is willing to fulfill prophecy and make the ultimate sacrifice—that of his life—in order to save the chinese essays rest of the wizarding world.” 2. Make your claim. The claim should dive into a smaller part of the overarching topic sentence. The topic sentence I gave can be broken down into several smaller claims—that Harry knew that he was fulfilling prophecy, that he was actually willing to die, and that his death would be of essay role of mass, profound significance. 3. Provide evidence from the text to back your claim. You can’t just go around making claims without any support.
You can use quotes or paraphrase parts of the text to add evidence. For evidence that Harry knew that he was fulfilling prophecy, you could cite the essay london instance in the hall of prophecies with the role of mass media quote, “and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the chinese essays other survives.” 4. Tie that evidence to the topic sentence. You have to of mass make it absolutely clear why you included the evidence. If you don’t, your analytical essay runs the risk of being a summary. For example, with the citing of the student grader prophecy, I would tell the reader that Harry and his friends found said prophecy and figured out that it had to be about on the him (although there are objections that it could’ve been referring to Neville, but we’ll leave that out of tales, this example). They knew that either Voldemort had to die or Harry did, and he had to be willing to do that. They’re not needed in the outline, but when you write your final essay, be sure you include effective transitions. Essay Role Media! This will help your essay flow. Conclusion of Your Analytical Essay Outline.
After you’ve built up all of your body paragraphs, given the chinese essays appropriate evidence to back your claims, and essay of mass tied that evidence to your awesome topic sentences, you’re ready to wrap it all up. The conclusion should be a brief restatement of your main points without being a direct copy. For example, “There are many motivations behind sacrifice—to help others, to ladder resume help oneself, or to keep a promise to a loved one—and J.K. Rowling explores several of on the, them through the research paper characters in the Harry Potter book series.” This, of course, does not suffice as a full conclusion. To fill it out and give the role media reader a sense of closure, you can relate the theme to the real world or end with a final quote from the text or the author.
